Tango in Brno — where to start
Argentine tango in Brno happens all the time, in plenty of places, and nobody quizzes you on your steps at the door. But the vocabulary is a little sneaky: milonga, praktika, class, workshop, neolonga. Here it is with no fluff, so you know where you are going and what to expect.
What is a milonga, praktika, class and workshop?
A milonga is a social dance, an evening when people simply dance. No teaching, just music (recorded or live), a floor and people. This is where tango happens. Most Brno milongas start in the evening, you do not need to bring a partner, you dance with whoever nods back. The current dates are in the calendar or in the milongas this week round-up.
A praktika (often a "praktikomilonga") is a milonga with the self-consciousness switched off. People still dance to music, but it is fine to stop, try something, repeat a figure you would not risk on a "proper" milonga. The ideal step between a class and a milonga.
A class (or course) is teaching: a teacher, a structure, building from the basics. Three schools in Brno run regular classes; the schedule is in the classes round-up.
A workshop is an intensive block, usually over a weekend, often with a visiting teacher from abroad, on one specific topic (musicality, technique, vals, milonga as a rhythm…). For when you want something a regular class will not get to.
A neolonga is a milonga danced not to the classic tango orchestras but to anything that suits tango: contemporary tracks, blues, film music. Same embrace, different soundtrack.
Praktika vs milonga — what is the difference?
Short version: at a milonga you dance; at a praktika you train and dance at the same time. A milonga has unwritten rules (the tanda, the cortina, how you invite someone, how you move around the floor) and people more or less keep them; at a praktika nobody frowns at you while you are still picking them up. Beginner? Go to praktikas first, then add milongas. Soon they will feel like the same thing — and they are.
Where to learn tango in Brno
Regular Argentine tango classes in Brno are run by three schools, each with its own handwriting: Taneční studio Stolárna, TangoLab Štěky and Gabriela & Petr Nečasovi. The schedule for all three plus the next workshops is in one place in the classes and courses round-up. Who teaches exactly where is in the schools and teachers overview.
No previous dance experience needed. No partner needed either — classes and milongas both swap partners as a matter of course.
My first evening at a milonga
- You barely need to know anything. Really. Come, get yourself a drink, watch, and when you feel like it, give it a go. Nobody is counting your steps.
- You do not need a partner. You dance with whoever you agree with by a look and a nod. That is normal.
- Shoes: a smooth sole, so you turn nicely. Trainers are not ideal on the floor, but nobody minds on a first visit.
- Dress however you are comfortable. Some milongas are dressier (concert, New Year); that is noted in the event description. Otherwise no dress code.
- Admission is usually around 100 to 200 CZK, more for dressier milongas, and water is often free. The exact figure is always in the event description.
- Arriving late is fine. Milongas run for several hours; people come and go throughout.
